On Becoming Just a Thing or
Artistic Redemption Through Fetishistic Transmutation

She gazes from behind the door which shields her face like a
burka. It conceals her uncertainty. She wonders if she really
belongs here and defiantly glares at those who doubt.

The portrait came into being over 15 years ago in 1987. As I
attempted to reveal the essence of my subject, I was humbled by
the medium while I struggled to reflect the humanity that rests in
each individual mortal soul.

The portrait became a "Just Thing" a couple of years ago, chosen
while sitting atop a pile of garbage and discarded refuse from
moving day. Discovered and reclaimed, it's new existence was
initiated. A curiosity - aggressively peeking from behind the door
she is sometimes recognized.

The portraits liberator/collector, elevated it to a spot in "Just
Things" and transmuted it by it's intriguing and necessary
position. Its existence belongs to its new viewer, its new keeper,
its redeemer.
